Community rallies for Lathrop High student hit by car

The community in Lathrop is rallying to support a student who was hit by a car near Lathrop High School last week.”Around the high school, we’ve had complaints in the past about, you know, just a lot of traffic delays, some speeding,” said Lathrop Police Chief Stephen Sealy.Officials said the student was injured, but did not share the extent of their injuries.Safety for students and drivers is a priority for the community, but prior to last week, it was not necessarily at the front of everyone’s mind. “We rush to get our kids to school, and we forget about those kids that have to cross the street,” said Brandy Perkins, a parent of a Lathrop High student. But the crash last week has reprioritized student safety.”I was saddened by it because it’s been an ongoing issue with the traffic that we have here in Lathrop,” Perkins said.Efforts are underway to improve safety, with a crossing signal set to be installed by the end of the week. “Those improvements, again, were already predetermined and didn’t arise because of this incident,” Sealy explained. “We believe that… with these lights, flashing lights as they’re crossing the street, it’s just visible, high visibility.”Parents are also doing what they can to improve safety.”Councilwoman Diallo made sure that we set up a bus system for those kids to get to and from school safely. So if we can just do our part and either carpool, use the bus system, or just obey the rules of the road,” Perkins said. Police have ruled the incident an accident and confirmed that no one was charged.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

The community in Lathrop is rallying to support a student who was hit by a car near Lathrop High School last week.

“Around the high school, we’ve had complaints in the past about, you know, just a lot of traffic delays, some speeding,” said Lathrop Police Chief Stephen Sealy.

Officials said the student was injured, but did not share the extent of their injuries.

Safety for students and drivers is a priority for the community, but prior to last week, it was not necessarily at the front of everyone’s mind.

“We rush to get our kids to school, and we forget about those kids that have to cross the street,” said Brandy Perkins, a parent of a Lathrop High student.

But the crash last week has reprioritized student safety.

“I was saddened by it because it’s been an ongoing issue with the traffic that we have here in Lathrop,” Perkins said.

Efforts are underway to improve safety, with a crossing signal set to be installed by the end of the week.

“Those improvements, again, were already predetermined and didn’t arise because of this incident,” Sealy explained. “We believe that… with these lights, flashing lights as they’re crossing the street, it’s just visible, high visibility.”

Parents are also doing what they can to improve safety.

“Councilwoman Diallo made sure that we set up a bus system for those kids to get to and from school safely. So if we can just do our part and either carpool, use the bus system, or just obey the rules of the road,” Perkins said.

Police have ruled the incident an accident and confirmed that no one was charged.
